Margaritaville: R.I.P. Jimmy. You were a multi-generational ICON.
Jimmy Buffet’s signature song from his album – Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, released on Valentine’s Day, 1977. It was certified PLATINUM December 14, 1977 and was heralded as the most requested song on rock/pop & easy listening radio for over a year. Buffett wrote most of the song in one night at a friend’s house in Austin after he discovered the drink at Lung’s Cocina del Sur restaurant (which is now High 5 today).
He finished Margaritaville up in Key West and Jimmy Buffett was suddenly the “GURU” of Island music and that “frozen concoction.” It remains his highest charting solo single and after a monster like that – who needs one higher ?
This award was made by Ken Kittinger – well known as the premier gold & platinum awards maker on Music Row for 50 years before his death at 91 in 2016. You can Google “Ken Kittinger Gold Records” for more info. It is authentic and ordered by ABC/Dunhill Records way back in the late 70’s. But as with all his awards orders, the label requested at least 25% more inventory than they needed for their mailing list to DJ’s, radio stations and music executives who were sent this in-house award in gratitude for their help in creating the sales needed for the Platinum certification from RIAA.
Mr. Kittinger had more than 5,000 items in his estate inventory from his Music Row workshop and numerous storage buildings on his property from his 5 decades of design and craftsmanship. He created awards for virtually every country artist and dozens of rock & pop artists from the U.S. and abroad (such as Apple’s Beatles awards).
A Certificate of Authenticity comes with the 15″ X 21″ X 1″ Shadow box award along with a signed promotional photo of Jimmy (reproduced by the label) and sent along to the recipients of the award. It is in a stylish 8 X 10 black frame. The award is also in a black wood frame with hanging wire attached on the back.
Carefully packaged in a custom-made box with lots of bubble wrap and Styrofoam for safe delivery.
Mr. Kittinger was my father. I am a 76 year-old retired CNN anchor and NBC White House Reporter, having served as a major broadcast journalist for nearly four decades. Selling my dad’s 50 years of memorabilia is a labor of love.
Thanks for looking. Dave
